In the seminal work of Nigel Hitchin, he introduced the notion of Higgs bundles and showed that their moduli spaces carry rich geometric structures. In this talk, I will give a gentle introduction to Higgs bundles and Hitchin fibrations, covering topics such as spectral correspondence, nonabelian Hodge correspondence, and their generalizations to the parabolic setting.
