We will discuss the mathematical knowledge of non-academics including school-children, workers, and non-literate non-european societies. In particular we will discuss the complex mathematical ideas of the navigators of the pacific islands. What do these alternative expressions of mathematical thinking have to teach us about how to present modern mathematics or even how to execute research?
