I will discuss the central extensions of loop algebras and the Witt algebra, corresponding to kac-moody algebras and the virasoro algebra. Moreover, I will discuss how these central extensions may be constructed using cyclic homology of the algebra of functions or the algebra of differential operators on a curve.
