Abstract: Branchvarieties are ideal objects in the world of projective varieties. Instead of a forced embedding into the ambient projective space, they are allowed to map finitely to it. The general theory of branchvarieties was developed by Alexeev and Knutson. In this talk the speaker will report on his research in progress aimed at understanding these spaces for hypersurfaces.
