(Online Seminar) Curvature Flows and Geometric Inequalities
Speaker(s): Ben Andrews (Australian National University)
Time: 09:30-10:30 June 17, 2020
Venue: Online
ABSTRACT
I will describe some recent work (partly with Yong Wei, Changwei Xiong, Yitao Lei and Xuzhong Chen) on fully nonlinear geometric heat flows for hypersurfaces, and their applications to prove geometric inequalities. A large family of flows involving elementary symmetric functions of curvature can be considered as`gradient flows' (in a generalised sense) for natural geometric quantities such as quermassintegrals. We consider several variations on this, including volume-preserving flows where we are able to prove rather complete results, both in Euclidean space and in hyperbolic space.
BRIEF BIO
Dr. Ben Andrews is currently ARC Laureate Professor of Mathematics at the Australian National University. He obtained his PhD under the supervision of Gerhard Huisken in 1994, and worked at Stanford University before returning to an ARC QEII Fellowship at ANU in 1998. He was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2013. His research has involved geometric flows and other geometric PDE including eigenvalue inequalities.
