Cohomogeneity one smooth manifolds have been used to construct examples of Riemannian metric with particular geometric properties, for example, positive or non-negative sectional curvature. In this talk I will discuss the structure and classification of cohomogeneity one smooth and topological manifolds, as well as extensions of these results to Alexandrov spaces (with curvature bounded below), which are synthetic generalizations of Riemannian manifolds.
