We start with a detour to recall part of the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface self-maps, and in particular how curves on the surface are stretched under iteration. The analogous notion for a general dynamical system, which we call the expansivity, appears to be captured for rational maps by a stretch factor naturally arising from the graphical description, and the minimal Lipschitz stretch of maps between graphs.
