In this talk, we will first give a gentle introduction to (quantum) cluster algebras and skein algebras associated with surfaces. We then focus on their bases and show how surface-cutting techniques can greatly simplify their study. Finally, we will explore intriguing reactions between loops, where they merge and split like molecules forming and breaking bonds.
