I would like to discuss our previous work on relative quantum rings that in a sense unifies the roles of absolute and relative insertions in relative Gromov-Witten theory. I will also roughly discuss some ongoing thoughts (without concrete results) about the roles of absolute and relative insertions in degeneration formula and how they may NOT be unified in the same fashion.
