Abstract: We say that a variety is A^1-connected if a general pair of points can be connected by the image of a map from the affine line. For example, affine spaces are A^1-connected. In principle, they are as important as rationally connected varieties in the classification theory of varieties. In this talk, I will start with many examples of A^1-connected varieties. Then I will survey their applications both in classical geometry and in logarithmic geometry.
