Abstract: The fundamental lemma in the Langlands programme can be stated as an combinatorial identity. This elementary appearance is however misleading, as all combinatorial approach have failed so far to solve the general case.

It is also attracting as more attention as many deep arithmetic application rely on its truth. The fundamental lemma is recently proved, and its proof resulted from the effort of a good many mathematicians with different backgrounds.
