We will discuss the recent developments in the asymptotic theory of finite groups and their applications to theoretical computer science, number theory and topology.
BiographyProfessor Zelmanov, one of the world's most eminenent mathematicians, specializes in Jordan algebras, Lie algebras and combinatorial group theory, he received his doctorate from the Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk in 1980. His dissertation completely changed the field of Jordan algebras. He then continued to make path breaking contributions to group theory and solved the Restricted Burnside Problem for which he was awarded the Fields Medal in 1994. He has held professorships at Wisconsin, Chicago and Yale, before accepting the Rita Atkinson Endowed Chair in Mathematics at the University of California in San Diego, where he is presently.
In addition to the Fields Medal, Zelmanov has received other honors for his outstanding work. He received the College de France Medal in 1992 and the Andre Aizenstadt Prize in 1996, Catedra BBV 2000 and European Academy of Sciences 2004. He is Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and member of the National Academy of Sciences. He also served recent two terms as member of Fields Medal Committee and Abel Prize Committee.
