Abstract: We will survey some recent results for the Landau and Boltzmann equations. We will explain how the understanding of the underlying physical phenomenon (such as dispersion, entropic relaxation, phase mixing) allows for the construction of global-in-time solutions in perturbative regimes. In particular, we will discuss how this can be achieved using some techniques inspired by those in hyperbolic pdes. Part of this talk is based on a joint work with Sanchit Chaturvedi and Toan Nguyen.

Speaker: Professor Jonathan Luk got his PhD from Princeton University in 2012 under the supervision of Igor Rodnianski. He was a lecturer at University of Cambridge before he joined Stanford University. His research focuses on the mathematical theory of general relativity and kinetic theory. He was awarded the Sloan research fellowship at 2017 and invited as a speaker at ICM this year.
