Abstract:
The study of complex abelian integrals, i.e. integrals of algebraic functions of one complex variable, was a major incentive to developcomplex algebraic geometry (some 150 years ago). After brieflyexplaining the complex theory, I will study its analog in the p-adicworld: this provides a concrete introduction to p-adic Hodge theory, atheory that was originated by Tate some 50 years ago and was turnedinto one of most powerful tools of number theory.
