The Geometry of Shape
Speaker(s): Professor Stephen Marsland(Scientific Computing School of Engineering and Advanced Technology Massey University)
Time: 12:30-13:30 April 6, 2016
Venue: Room 29, Quan Zhai, BICMR
The mathematical analysis of shape, and shape change, has applications in many fields, most notably medicine and biology, but also engineering design. In this talk I will give a picture of the field from the point of view of geometry, highlighting the link between the mathematics (the diffeomorphism group and infinite dimensional Riemannian geometry), the challenges with studying shape, and some of the applications, as well as some of the history of the area.
