Abstract: It was observed in the mid 90s that many aspects of algebraic geometry have their analogues in symplectic geometry via the newly created Gromov-Witten invariants. These observations lead to two kinds of related speculations/conjectures. One is the so-called symplectic birational geometry, which aims to classify symplectic manifolds up to "birational equivalence". The other is to ask if certain algebraic properties are symplectic topological invariant. In this talk I will give an elementary introduction to these circle of ideas with emphasis on symplectic geometric properties of rationally connected varieties.
