Abstract: The quantum theories of some string models admit branes which can be geometrically characterized as coherent sheaves. Integral functors can be exploited to describe some mirror dualities. The Fourier-Mukai transform relates the derived categories of an abelian variety and of its dual variety. The Nahm construction, starting from as instanton on a flat torus, produces an instanton on the dual torus. The bridge between these two transforms is provided by a relation between index bundles and higher direct images. I will give a brief introduction.
