We consider two different discrete group actions on a compact space. In algebraic topology, the associated homotopy quotient is a good model for the orbit space. In noncommutative geometry, the crossed product is another such model. Do isomorphic homotopy quotients lead to isomorphic crossed product algebras? We'll give a partial answer to this question, and explain a geometric interpretation of the so-called Elliott invariant along the way.
