We will review the differential-geometric approach to the holomorphic anomaly equations for compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We will argue that in the holomorphic limit there is an equivalent algebro-geometric description. In terms of the latter, we unveil a previously unknown Lie algebra governing the topological string partition functions.
