Abstract: I will describe how the parametric representation of Feynman integrals leads to an interpretation as periods of algebraic varieties, thus constraining the numbers that can occur as residues of Feynman integrals in terms of the motive of the variety. I will also discuss how one can obtain information on the motives by studying classes in the Grothendieck ring. The talk will survey various results in the field and focus on joint work with Paolo Aluffi and with Ozgur Ceyhan.
