Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss the recent work (partly with Chi Li, partly with Xiaowei Wang) on using minimal model program to study K-stability, which is the algebraic notion for extremal metric. In particular, we will prove Tian's conjecture on special degeneration of Fano varieties and the nonexistence of asymptotically GIT compactification of Giesker's moduli spaces of surfaces.
