Abstract: We outline a new, infinitesimal, classification of symmetric spaces G/K where G is an affine Kac-Moody group and show that they correspond essentially to pairs of symmetric spacees from Cartan's list. This is joint work with W. Freyn. We do not assume familiarity with affine Kac-Moody algebras.
