In this talk, I will show the asymptotic stability of shock waves in the L^\infty(R) space for 1-d scalar conservation laws, where the initial perturbations are periodic functions. In contrast to the localized (e.g. compactly supported) perturbations, the periodic oscillations at the far field produce a new shift for the background shock as time increases, which has different properties in inviscid and viscous cases. This is a joint work with Zhouping Xin and Yuan Yuan.
