I will survey my work with Ginzburg and Rallis, where we constructed, for a given self-dual (irreducible, automorphic,) cuspidal representation \tau on GL(n), a generic, cuspidal representation \pi on an appropriate classical group, such that \pi lifts functorially to \tau. The construction results naturally from Rankin-Selberg integrals for GxGL(n). The automorphic descent of \tau, which is the representation \pi, is obtained by applying a certain Fourier coefficient, stabilized by G, to the residue at s=1 of a certain Eisenstein series parabolically induced from \tau.
