Abstract: I will state two versions of Clifford's type theorems for fibered varieties by curves, one for positive characteristics, and the other for characteristic zero. Each one can be viewed as a relative version of the classical Clifford's theorem for curves. As two special consequences, I will talk about a slope inequality for families of curves over surfaces and an explicit result on the volume of irregular 3-folds of general type. Higher dimensional results will also be discussed.
