Abstract: The minimal log discrepancy (mld) is an invariant of singularities which plays an important role in the minimal model program (MMP). The singularities in the MMP are defined in terms of mld's. The termination of flips, one of the main problems in the MMP, is reduced to conjectural properties of mld's. If one considers mld's on non-singular varieties, then one can associate them to the mld for the generic limit. The generic limit is a limit of ideals, taken in a formal power series ring. I will explain the recent progress in the study of mld's from the point of view of generic limits.
