The boson–fermion correspondence originally appeared in string theory and was later used by the Kyoto school of mathematical physics to derive soliton solutions of the KP hierarchy. Through these developments, a surprising connection to the theory of symmetric functions emerged. In this talk, I will give an overview of the boson–fermion correspondence from a combinatorial viewpoint and discuss its many applications in the theory of symmetric functions.
