Alfred Karl Louis received his Diploma in applied mathematics from Saarland University, in 1972, his Ph.D. in Mainz, in 1976, and the Habilitation in Münnster, in 1982. From 1980 to 1981, he was a visiting Assistant Professor at the State University of New York, in Buffalo. From 1983 to 1986, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Kaiserslautern. He was a visiting Professor at the Université de Montpellier in 2000. From 1986 to 1990, he was a Full Professor at the Technical University of Berlin. Since 1990, he is the Chair for Applied Mathematics at Saarland University in Saarbrücken. He declined offers as Full Professor, respectively, from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München in 1997, and from Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge in 2000.
From 1992 to 1998, he is a Member of the Board of GAMM (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics). Since 1999, He is the Head of the Scientific Board of Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB). Since 1999, He is a Member of the Scientific Board of Radon Institute Linz.
From 1997 to 1999, he was a Vice-President of the Saarland University.
In 1996, He founded the ISCA (Institute of Scientific Computing and Applications).
He has severed as associate editors for IEEE Transaction Medical Imaging, SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, International Journal of Biomedical Imaging, Inverse Problems, Computing, Surveys on Mathematics for Industry.
Since 1996, he is the Managing Editor for Documenta Mathematica. Since 2010, he is the Editor-in-Chief for Inverse Problems, which is the flag journal on inverse problems.
Since 1978, he is working on mathematical problems from computerized tomography. His research interests cover inverse problems, medical imaging, nondestructive testing, parameter estimation, wavelets and industrial mathematics.
