Abstract: Hausdorff dimension is a positive real number that quantifies the size of fractal sets. In many cases this value isn't explicitly known, but can be estimated with different levels of accuracy (depending on the method used). We will describe applications to different areas of mathematics, including number theory, geometry and dynamical systems.
Bio-Sketch: Prof. Mark Pollicott obtained his PhD degree from Warwick University in 1984, and is currently a professor at Warwick University. He has produced more than 200 papers. Basides surveys and conference papers, he has published more than 170 papers on internationally renowed journals, including Annals of Mathematics (3) and Inventiones Mathematicae (7). He has also produced 6 books as the author and 3 books as the edtior. He has been awarded many grants, including ERC Advanced Grant, EPSRC Leadership Fellowship, and EPSRC standard grant (8 times).
