报告题目:From Tits building to non-negatively curved manifolds
Tits building is a fundamental theory in mathematics which provides a combinatorial viewpoint to unify Lie theory over various algebraic fields. It served as the main tool for the first proof of the celebrated Mostow rigidity theorem. In this talk, I will explain briefly, how to bring Tits building into Riemannian geometry for polar manifolds with non-negative sectional curvature. In the presence of positive sectional curvature, a rigidity theorem for polar manifolds was proved, in a joint program with Karsten Grove and Gudlaugur Thorbergsson. An ongoing program with Karsten Grove is to explore further the structure of polar manifolds with non-negative curvature, toward a new conjectural characterization of compact type symmetric spaces.
