Abstract: The existence of topological states or phases of matter such as fractional quantum Hall liquids and topological insulators is one of the remarkable occurrences in nature. Their mathematical description by topological quantum field theories and their connections with low-dimensional topology, quantum groups, and von Neumann algebras is equally remarkable. Yet another motivation for our interests stems from the promise which they hold for scalable fault-tolerant quantum computing. The goal of this series of lectures is to give an introduction to topological quantum field theory and its application to topological quantum computing.
